                       Ecologist/Environmental Scientist

First People of the Millewa Mallee Aboriginal Corporation (FPMMAC) are the Registered Aboriginal Party and the Traditional Owner Corporation in the far north-west of Victoria and operate a range of cultural heritage and environmental protection programs. FPMMAC was established in 2015 to advance the aspirations of Traditional Owners in relation to native title, a future settlement under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 and our cultural heritage rights and interests.

The Principal objectives of FPMMAC include among other things:

  • to promote, protect and advance the rights, interests and aspirations of FPMM
  • to act in the best interests of FPMM
  • to promote and advance the economic and cultural sustainability of FPMM
  • to seek to influence government policy in relation to all issues affecting FPMM, including but not
  • limited to water, land management, flora & fauna management, education, health, housing,
  • employment and economic development
  • to promote, protect and manage Aboriginal Cultural Heritage.

First People of the Millewa-Mallee are in an exciting growth and development stage and require the services of an experienced and self-motivated Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to assist us.

                                 POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title:                    Ecologist/Environmental Scientist

FTE:                            Full time

Duration:                    Fixed term (12 months with extension dependant            upon funding)

Location:                    Mildura, Victoria
Prime Function:         The Ecologist/Environmental Scientist is responsible for assisting with the implementation of the Country and Water Plan, analysis, preparation of reports and representation of the Corporation’s environmental interests.  

Reports to:               Chief Executive Officer

Salary range:            $100,000 + superannuation

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Implementation of First People of the Millewa-Mallee’s Country and Water Plan
  • Preparation of research, analysis, field surveys, impact assessments, approvals and technical reports.
  • Delivery of project work from initial scope and client liaison through to commercial delivery 
  • Provision of summaries of technical data and legislation for FPMMAC staff, Board and Members.
  • Provision of input into environmental analyses, mapping, reporting and project work
  • Synthesis of Indigenous knowledge of environment and scientific knowledge
  • Assist with preparation of submissions and proposals
  • Represent the land, water and environmental interests of FPMMAC
  • Training and mentoring
  • Maintaining a solid understanding of commonwealth, state and local government environmental regulations and their application as well as relevant industry standards, practices and approvals processes.
  • Undertake other tasks as requested 

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Ecology or equivalent
  • Experience in environmental and biodiversity management
  • Around 5 – 10 + years postgraduate experience
  • Working knowledge of relevant Victorian and Australian legislation and guidelines, and of Australian and International standards.
  • Technical competency with recent experience across a range of sectors and project areas
  • Working knowledge of consulting practice plus extensive project management skills
  • Experience in the efficient preparation, submission and management of specialist biodiversity assessment reports
  • Experience developing proposals and compiling detailed estimates of works
  • Ability and willingness to undertake field work as required
  • Current driver’s licence, Senior First Aid Certificate and WHS green/white card
  • Strong ability to solve problems, offer solutions and make decisions
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to show initiative and meet reporting timeframes
  • Driver’s license
