The appointee will be part of the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases (NCARD), an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence, situated in The UWA Medical School and located in The Harry Perkins Medical Research Building at QEII Medical Centre.

About the role

The main role will be to provide technical support to assigned immunology projects within the mesothelioma research group. The projects involve tumour immunology, animal handling (mice), flow cytometry, and other T cell assays, together with some general lab support duties.

The group is committed to personal development through learning and meets regularly to discuss results and analyse recent publications, as well as hosting and collaborating with national and international scientists.

Skills and experience

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree in Bachelor of Science or equivalent in biological science field
  • Experience with general laboratory practice, techniques and instrumentation including tissue culture
  • Well developed interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate in a group environment and work as part of a team
  • Excellent organisational skills with demonstrated ability to identify and prioritise key tasks and meet deadlines
  • Highly developed verbal and written communications skills with an attention to detail
  • High level of proficiency in use of standard word processing, email, spreadsheet, presentation, referencing and graphing software
  • Reliable and accurate data management and analytical skills, and experience using database packages
  • Willingness to work in an animal handling role when required
  • Understanding of the ethical issues relating to animal experimentation and research involving patients

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Flow cytometry staining and analysis with a tumour immunology focus
  • Certification in good clinical research practice (ICH GCP)
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity towards, issues in cancer research
  • Phlebotomy training and experience
  • Experience in processing, storing and recording clinical samples
  • Experience with assisting in the preparation of research grant applications
  • Experience with the preparation of Ethics Committee submissions
