QUT Centre for Materials Science

Curiosity-driven research

The QUT Centre for Materials Science is the fundamental scientific engine room for materials innovation, providing materials-based solutions for QUT's application-driven centres and research strengths. The centre fosters emerging research talent from the PhD to the Early Career Researcher (ECR) level, while providing research space and freedom to the leaders in their field. The centre fuses cross-disciplinary fundamental research expertise within QUT, enabling a coherent research space for materials discovery. Of particular focus is the interface of matter with its surroundings, which controls function. The centre has outstanding research strengths in:

  • soft matter materials
  • hard condensed matter materials
  • computation, prediction and modelling
  • analytical technique development.

The QUT School of Chemistry and Physics undertakes teaching and research that advances the frontiers of the chemical and physical sciences to solve real-world challenges. The school specialises in research covering diverse topics, including:

  • studies of particles, fields and radiation and their interaction with matter
  • the design, synthesis, characterisation and study of the properties of molecules and materials
  • the implementation of these molecules and materials in various applications.

About the scholarships

We are seeking full-time highly motivated PhD and MPhil candidates to perform cutting-edge materials research commencing 2021. We have multiple projects available which include:

  • Eradicating bacterial biofilms with nitroxide-antimicrobial hybrids (two projects available – PhD only)
  • Plasma-assisted on-surface assembly for electrocatalytic hydrogen production and other applications (four projects available – PhD only)
  • Materials discovery and design from quantum mechanics-based computational approaches: single atoms on ferroelectric layers for controlled photocatalytic CO2 reduction (one project available – PhD or MPhil)
  • Discovery and design of novel catalysts from computational chemistry (one project available – PhD or MPhil)
  • Advanced materials for high-performance perovskite monolithic photocapacitors (two projects available – PhD or MPhil)

Eligibility

Our ideal candidates hold a BSc or MSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, etc.). Specific projects may have additional eligibility requirements. For more information please visit QUT - Centre for Materials Science and School of Chemistry and Physics - multiple projects

Excellent oral and written communication skills, motivation and the ability to work as part of a team are also required.

QUT is committed to Equity and Diversity among our staff and students and we actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the university. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information.
