Coastguard is New Zealand’s charity saving lives at sea, and is seeking applicants for the position of Regional Manager - Northern, based at the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre at Mechanics Bay. 

The Regional Manager leads and manages a team whose role it is to empower volunteers, staff, and the 23 Unit Management Teams covering from Raglan on the west coast to Cape Reinga to Thames. To achieve this, the Regional Manager will proactively manage change, mentor, coach, and advise those volunteers who are in key leadership roles, and be a friend to Coastguard volunteers within their region. 

Accountable to the Head of Operations for the Operational Readiness of their region, the Regional Manager must establish viable connections, manage key relationships and be able to translate strategy to action within their area of remit.

The key leadership accountabilities for this role include:

  • Financial Acuity – Ensure the financial oversight of the region through the meeting of budget goals within agreed variations.  Unit financial viability is monitored and supported. Financial audits and reviews for units are completed and reported in compliance with legislative requirements.
  • People Leadership – Our volunteers and staff are supported with human resource advice and systems for the recruitment, training, resourcing, retention, and recognition and rewarding of volunteers and staff.
  • Risk Management and Audit – The Region and its Units comply with all legislation, policy and guidelines relevant to maritime safety and operational readiness.
  • Unit Management Support – Ensuring that Unit Management teams are in place and supported to achieve outcomes that are in line with national strategic and operational goals.
  • Collaboration – Develop and maintain positive relationships with SAR partners, other emergency services, sponsors, supporters and local authorities.

The successful applicant will have approximately 10 years’ experience in managerial/leadership roles, a thorough understanding of and experience in business partnering and relationship management, coupled with proven experience in translating strategy into action. It would be an advantage if the applicant has a sound understanding of maritime activities.
